KELLY AWOKE SCREAMING. The nightmare had returned with a vengeance. Sitting up in bed, she clasped both hands to her mouth to stop her shrieks. The darkness was muted by moonlight, seeping through the curtains at the window. Sobbing for breath, Kelly climbed out of bed, covered with sweat, then hobbled out the door toward the bathroom. Splashing cold water on her face always helped bring her back to the here and now.

In the living room, she gripped the edge of the couch as she passed. The coolness of the cedar floor beneath her bare feet helped reorient her, but she had to keep pressing her fist against her mouth to stop the sobbing. She didn’t want to wake Sky. He’d made it very clear last night at dinner that she was no longer welcome. Her breathing ragged, and with hot tears running down her cheeks, she made it to the bathroom.

She had to be quiet! Turning on the faucet with a shaking hand, Kelly leaned over and splashed the cold, soothing water across her eyes and cheeks. Doing so slowed the mental images flashing through her head of the helicopter falling to the ground, the forest fire blazing around her like hell itself.

“Kelly?”

Sky’s voice, thick with sleep, intruded.

She jerked upward. Sky stood in front of her, wearing only light blue pajama bottoms, his broad chest gleaming in the moonlight. His hair was tousled, his eyes sleepy, his voice husky with concern.

“I, uh, I had a bad dream,” she stammered, grabbing a towel and pressing it to her face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you. I tried to be quiet.” And suddenly, despite herself, Kelly began to cry again. How embarrassing that she couldn’t control the terrible sounds tearing out of her mouth. Sky had never seen her like this. Since she’d moved to the cabin, her nightmares had become much less frequent, and Kelly was forever grateful.

Sky reached out to her. “Come here,” he rasped, his hands moving to her shaking shoulders and pulling her toward him. He did so automatically, without thinking. His heart was screaming at him to help her. He couldn’t stand to see Kelly suffering.

At first she tensed. And then she tried to pull away.

“Don’t fight me,” he growled, and gripped her even more firmly.

“But you don’t want me here!” Kelly cried, dropping the towel from her face. “Let me go, Sky! Just let me go!”

Her hoarse voice shattered his reserve. He saw the anguish in her red-rimmed, watery eyes, saw the pain he’d caused her. Digging his fingers into her shoulders, he shook his head.

“I do want you here.” He held her tighter.

Kelly sobbed. It was useless to fight her feelings for Sky. The burning look in his eyes, the way his mouth set, the strength of his grip on her shoulders all persuaded her to stop fighting him. If only for a few minutes, she could sink into Sky’s arms and feel safe. He was a warrior, a protector, and had always made her feel secure in an uncertain world.
